A heat exchanger (HX) machine has one steam boiler with a tube running through it that flash-heats brew water on demand. That means you can brew and steam simultaneously, without paying for two boilers.
HX machines — often built around the E61 group — sit between single and dual boilers in price. Brew temperature is managed with a cooling flush rather than a dial, which some owners enjoy and others would rather skip.

Care & maintenance
Scale inside the narrow heat-exchanger tube is the classic HX failure, so water quality matters more than on any other type — many owners run these on filtered or bottled water only. The E61 group wants regular detergent backflushes and occasional lubrication of the cam.
